Christmas String Light DIY Upgrades

My husband has a NO GLITTER rule in our house which is strictly enforced around the holidays.  Our tree ornaments have no glitter and you won’t find any glitter on our Christmas cards either.  He even refuses to unpack our shipments of glitter at the shop.  There is no rule, however, for Christmas LIGHTS so every year I load up the tree, the dining room table, fireplace mantle and every other surface I can with string lights.  Each year after Christmas I pick up a few extra strands for the following year and my collection keeps growning!

String lights have come a long way over the years and now you can easily spend a small fortune on fancy lights in trendy colours and shapes.  That doesn’t mean that you have to throw out those plain strands though.  Below are a few of my favourite ways to upgrade them on a budget!

Let’s start with a simple DIY upgrade that uses white ping-pong balls, a utility knife and white string lights.  Simply score the balls enough to insert the light inside and watch them light up with a soft white glow.  If you want to try this at home get the full tutorial here.

DIY PING-PONG BALL STRING LIGHTS

Farm house decor is very popular these days and this string light upgrade uses dixie cuts and jute to give those plain strands a rustic look.  Click here for the full tutorial.

Want to add a bit of glamour to your tree, garland or wreath? Spray paint those plain green wires in copper or gold!  We love it paired with crisp white on the fireplace mantle or dining room table.  See how it was done by following this link.
