With temperatures in the 50’s and rainy afternoons you wouldn’t think we’re already a few days into Spring! That’s why on cold evenings bedtime comes early at our house. After all, under the covers is the warmest place to be! I love putting on a cozy pair of pj’s and snuggling up in bed after a long day.
The bedroom is where we recharge our batteries. It’s also the last room we see at the end of the day and the the first thing we see in the morning. There are a lot of things we can do to create a soothing atmosphere in the bedroom (more on that later so don’t forget to scroll down) but let’s start with wall paint colours.
Have you ever walked into a spa and felt instantly relaxed? To get the same feel at home keep the colour scheme soft – neutral muted colours without a lot of sharp contrast. Avoid high energy colours like yellow and orange which will stimulate the eyes and keep you from winding down. This bedroom from Jillian Harris is a great example of how to layer soft shades for the ultimate dreamy space. Get this look at home with Benjamin Moore Seapearl OC-19. Another great choice that’s a bit darker is Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist.
Too pink? Here’s another design using a similar wall colour but more neutral furnishings and accessories.
No conversation about dreamy neutrals would be complete without Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. It has a hint of sage green which gives it just enough warmth to create a cozy space but it’s still neutral enough to compliment pretty much any other colour.
Beige gets a bad rep. Sometimes, customers will pass over a paint colour just because it has “beige” in the name (don’t even get me started on Moonstone). Generally paint colours on the wall will look about half a shade darker than they look on the paint swatch and darker colours can make a room feel smaller. If you have a large space and you want it to feel more intimate and cozy try Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. It’s the perfect balance between grey and beige and just the right amount of depth.

My husband often points out that there are a lot more colours in the fan deck than just grey. I agree – even though grey is my FAVOURITE. Shades of blue are another great choice for bedroom walls – especially the moody ones with a hint of (you guessed it) grey. One of my favourites is Benjamin Moore Pale Smoke. It changes in tone depending on the time of day and lighting but is always beautiful
Another beautiful shade with more colour is the well-named Benjamin Moore Quiet Moments. Still soft but with more punch.
Light and bright not for you? Navy is a great choice if you want to surround yourself with colour and it’s as comfortable as that favourite pair of jeans. If your room has a fair bit of natural light try Benjamin Moore Hale Navy. For rooms with less light (where Hale Navy can look almost black) try Benajamin Moore Kensington Blue.

We’re surrounded by the beautiful colours of our ocean and on stormy days the waters are a deep teal. Both Benjamin Moore Newburg Green and Dark Teal are great options if you want to bring this rich colour home.
Now that you’re on your way to picking the perfect wall colour, here are a coupe of tips for making your sleep even better!
Technology is great but try to keep it out of the bedroom. Sure, scrolling through Instagram until all hours may seem like a good idea (guilty) but it won’t help your tired eyes relax or your brain stop planning. And don’t worry – those emails will still be there in the morning and you’ll be more refreshed and focused to address them than you are at midnight.
Invest in some good sheets. I recently bough a nice Sferra set from the Irish Linen Shop and even though they were pricey I know they will last me through years of washing. I learned years ago that while inexpensive sheets may seem like they’re saving you money, they get itchy and rough after a few months of washes.
Speaking of laundry, don’t forget to wash your pillows and duvets. We wash ours twice a year and hang them outside in the sunshine to dry. Over time they collect oils, dirt and skin from our bodies so it’s important to give them a good cleaning seasonally.
To me smells have always been important. In the cooler months the windows are open to let in fresh air and there’s usually a candle burning (currently DemiLune Fleurs de Tabac from Atelerie). Other great scents for relaxing are lavender, cinnamon and chamomile.
