I often compare decorating a space to picking out an outfit. While the guys roll their eyes at this, not only is your closet a perfect way to get inspired for your home’s colour scheme, a well balanced room is very much like a well put together outfit. Think about it – if you love a colour enough to wear it often (for me it’s grey and navy) chances are you’ll love surrounding yourself with the same scheme in your surroundings (my living room walls are grey).
Returning to our outfit analogy, every space needs a pop of colour just like that classic black dress needs a fun pair of shoes or a statement necklace. While it would be overwhelming to paint the entire living room in highlighter yellow, a well placed cabinet or console will add visual interest without taking over the space. Furniture is a great way to have fun with colour! Plus, you can have a lot of fun recycling and up cycling old pieces (whether your own or newly found). Below are some of my favourite examples. Don’t forget to Pin your favourites for later!
You can also add colour to your space by painting the BACK of your shelves, bookcases, or kitchen cabinets. If you want to add colour and pattern try a removable semipermanent product like Tempaper (coming soon!), a self adhesive wallpaper that’s easy to apply and remove. This is a great way to highlight your collection!
Doors might serve a very important function but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a design feature too! If you want to make a statement skip the white paint and try a bolder design.
Finally, an accent wall is a great way not only to add bold colour to your room, it’s also a great way to highlight your favourite accessory, piece of furniture or architectural detail. Below are some of my favourites!
