WELCOME TO BERMUDA'S OLDEST PAINT STORE

DIY Projects To Try This Weekend

My husband will agree that the most dangerous words that can come out of my mouth are “Honey, I’ve been thinking.”  Unfortunately for him I am constantly scanning the internet for DIY projects to share with our customers and they inevitably inspire me to take on my own home improvements.  I AM however, very fortunate in that my (very patient) husband is handy and with a bit of grumbling usually agrees to give up his week nights to build something.

One of the first things we (okay – not so much me and mostly the hubby) put together was this galvanized pipe light fixture from The Gathered Home.  Our version has two rows of light and some very inefficient but beautiful Edison lightbulbs.  The tutorial was super easy to follow and our friends at ESC helped us with the wiring.  To make your own click on the image below.

Next on my list was a frame around our mirror in the bathroom.  It was just a plain piece of glass with no border and over the years the edges were starting to go black.   We used a version of this tutorial from Momtastic DIY and some white molding to make a simple frame that made a huge difference.

If you’ve been following along you know I have an unhealthy obsession with laundry.  Even if you don’t share my passion for this chore, you can still create a tidy and functional space without spending a fortune with this DIY counter from Vintage Revivals.  It will give you much needed work space on top of the washer and dryer and while I can’t promise it will make you fall in love with sorting and folding at least it might make it a bit easier.

At our house, the shoes come off at the door.  I hate the idea of tracking all the dirt and grime (not to mention paint) all over the house – and on my white bathroom floor mats.  One of the projects on my list (shhh….don’t tell my husband) is this DIY wooden mat from Lonny Mag.

Every time we have a container, there’s always a stack of shipping palettes that we’re more than happy to give away.  With a little elbow grease and a dash of imagination the wood can be transformed into almost anything.  There are thousands of ideas out there ranging from garden boxes to outdoor furniture but this coffee table is one of my favourites and doesn’t require a lot of fancy tools or carpentry know how.

If you DO have some carpentry know-how and are looking for a more advanced project, nothing beats the creative ideas on Ana White’s blog.  Growing up in New England I loved the cozy glow of the fireplace in the winter and even though we don’t get that in Bermuda (I don’t miss shoveling snow AT ALL) I still sometimes miss the ambiance.  Even if you don’t have a chimney, you can still make this DIY mantle, fill it with candles and curl up on the couch in the evening.  Plus it’s so much fun to have another place to decorate for the holidays!

Replacing old wooden shutters?  These days most people are moving to easy-care materials like PVC but if you’re updating don’t take those shutters to the dump quite yet.  Turn them into a rustic side table perfect for the living room.  You can get the tutorial here.

What else shouldn’t you throw away? Old cabinet drawers!  If you’re renovating the kitchen (or getting rid of a dresser or desk) save the drawers and them them in a fun Mason Jar centerpiece perfect for the table.  Click here for a link to the tutorial from My Creative Days.

And who wouldn’t want to be spoiled with breakfast in bed on this Copper Pipe Tray from Mountain Modern Life? I know I would!

And last but certainly not least is my most recent find – a DIY coffee station tutorial from Live Simply.  You might need a cup of coffee to get you started but it will be well worth it.
