Update Your Terra Cotta Pots In Time For Spring

For the past couple of days the weather has been stunning! After two windy, rainy and cold months the change has certainly been a welcome one.  Spring is coming quickly and it won’t be long until I’ll be getting back into the garden.

In the meantime, sunny weekend afternoons are a great time to decorate those plain terra cotta pots.  They make beautiful accents on the window sill or the patio and you don’t need a lot of art skill or fancy tools to create simple but stunning designs like the ones below.

I am huge believer that less is more!  These scalloped pots are super cute and all you need is a little leftover white paint.  If you have a steady hand you can freestyle your design.  If you need a little help or want a more polished paint job check out a product like Shape Tape.

A rustic thread like twine goes great with paint and terra cotta! Glue it around the rim and tie with a simple bow.  Finish with a sweet quote!

Love colour?  Use bright shades that match your decor around the rim of your pots to brighten them up.

Or get creative with a simple dipped design.  Use different shades of the same colour and painter’s tape to create these geometric looks perfect for modern spaces.

Feeling fancy?  Give your plain pots glamour with gold leaf.  It’s a bit tricky to master (click on the photo to check out this simple tutorial) but gives you a beautiful metallic finish.  For a worn look, gently distress so your pots don’t look TOO perfect.

If gold leaf intimidates you (or you can’t find any) try gold paint instead.  You can either tape out your design (like with the dipped pots above) or have fun freehand.

Starting an herb garden?  Remember what you planted with chalkboard paint!  It’s a fun way to label your pots.

If you don’t have any chalkboard paint on hand, you can use leftover acrylic paint.

These whitewashed pots may look intimating but the process couldn’t be easier!  It’s a great alternative to painting your terra cotta a solid colour and will give your pots a vintage feel.

Painting plain pots is not only a great outdoor weekend project, it’s a great way to use up that left over house or craft paint!  Just remember if you’re planning on keeping those pots outside (or even on the window sill) to use and exterior grade paint or a clear sealer.  It will help keep all your hard work from fading in the sun or being damaged by rain.
