OPEN UP – Shelves In The Kitchen

My husband often jokes that if you come to our house for dinner, please don’t open the closet.  When in the mood I will clean with VIGOR but usually my idea of tidying up is shoving everything in the closet/cupboard and shutting the door.  After all, if you can’t see it that means it doesn’t exist right?

That’s why I’m supremely jealous of the people who can throw open the kitchen cupboards and boldly put their treasures on display in perfect tidy rows.  In all seriousness though, removing some doors or replacing cabinets with shelves is a great way to make small kitchens feel more open and inviting.  Plus, it’s a great way to show off that beautiful dinnerware!

Want to add a bit of color to your kitchen? Try painting a coordinating accent colour behind your new shelves or add beautiful tile in a fun pattern.  And don’t forget that you don’t have limit yourself to just plates and glasses.  Open shelves are a great place to grow fresh herbs in decorative pots, show off your collection of pots and pans (we’re drooling over the copper ones), or keep your cookbooks within arms reach.

For a rustic farmhouse look try rough wooden shelves with iron brackets.  If you prefer a more modern aesthetic, use sleek white or even stainless floating shelves without a lot of visible hardware.

There are literally millions of ideas on Houzz but here are some of my favourites.  Click on the photos for more of these stunning spaces!
