SOOTHING BEDROOMS In Moody Shades

First, let me start off by saying that I LOVE sleep and that makes the bedroom my favourite room in the house.  After a long day it’s where I go to relax and recharge my batteries.   The bedroom is also the most personal room in the house and should reflect what makes you happiest and most comfortable.

There are two directions you can take with a bedroom colour scheme – bright and cheerful (perfect for a jolt of energy in the morning) or soft and soothing (great for relaxing).  I prefer the latter.   Warm colors with a gray undertone are a great start to creating your own personal sanctuary.  Neutral colors like taupe, beige, brown or gray will leave you a lot of room to experiment with accent colors.  Keep the room from feeling too dark by using light bedding, curtains or rugs.  Changing the duvet cover, pillow shams and blankets is a great and inexpensive way to update your look on a budget.

If you’re picking a new wall paint colour for the bedroom, I strongly recommend trying a sample on the wall and looking at it at night with the lights on.  After all, you probably don’t spend a whole lot of time in the bedroom at noon time and lighting has a huge effect on colour. The glare of high gloss paints can be distracting so choose a soft sheen like matte or flat for the walls and ceiling.  Since the bedroom is not a high traffic area and probably not a space where you’ll have to wash dirt off the walls often, a flatter paint will hide minor wall imperfections. TIP:  Invest in some high quality sheets.  They may be more expensive but they will wash better and last longer than cheaper ones.  Plus, they will become super soft and cozy over time.
