Not So Scary Black Rooms

Beautiful Living Room In Black And Cream
When I wanted to paint a room at home black the decision was met with more than a few raised eyebrows from family members and friends. I assured them that I was not reliving some forgotten teenage angst and, with the blessing of my (very patient) husband, bravely brought home my paint.
In the spirit of full disclosure, the first few roller marks brought on panic. But I made a commitment and in an afternoon, the home office turned into my favourite room in the house.
Whether you’re using it on an accent wall or on ALL the walls, black can be a super chic choice perfect for both modern and traditional spaces. To cut down on the amount of coats you’ll need for full coverage choose a premium paint like Benjamin Moore Aura. Because my walls are plastered and not perfect, I chose a matte paint to cut down on reflection and glare. The shinier the paint, the more it will highlight surface imperfections, especially in an unforgiving colour like black. If your walls are smooth and you’re feeling brave try a high gloss finish for a lacquered look. Finally, black (or dark grey) paint is available in dozens of shades with both warm or cool undertones. Try a sample to see which will work best in your home.
Black walls are the perfect background for furniture, fabrics, artwork and accessories. For a crisp modern feel use clean lines, sharp corners, a cool metal like stainless or pewter and bright white woodwork. Add pops of colour like primary yellow, lime green, or fire engine red for visual interest. For a more tradition space, pair black walls with creamy woodwork, touches of metallic gold, and soft fabrics in warm colours.
To make it less scary, we have come up with some beautiful rooms that use black walls as a part of their design.
